Leeds Carnegie 27 - London Irish 19

Tries from Luther Burrell, Mike MacDonald and Daniel Browne sealed an incredible victory for Leeds Carnegie over London Irish.

Leeds Carnegie returned to Headingley Carnegie knowing that they needed to get something out of their clash with London Irish after Newcastle victory over Quins 48 hours earlier.

The game started badly for Leeds when Adrian Jarvis put his kick off out of play on the full and the visitors took control of the early possession after that. Carnegie needed to regroup quickly from a line out when Nick Kennedy burst through on the charge. He was eventually pulled down but the pressure proved too much and Malone was given a simple penalty chance to open the scoring after six minutes.

The fly half then missed a long range effort when Leeds were penalised at their own scrum and that was to be his last involvement as he left the game after 14 minutes to be replaced by Ryan Lamb. As he was going off so was Leeds skipper Marco Wentzel, who pulled up after trying to chase through for a kick, Sean Hohneck coming on.

Leeds seemed to settle into their stride after that and enjoyed more time on the ball. However, they fell further behind after 19 minutes when Henry Fa'afili was penalised for a dangerous tackle. Ryan Lamb notched up his first points to make it 6-0.

The Headingley Carnegie faithful were getting increasingly frustrated by the string of penalties against their side and a London Irish backline that was up very quickly on defence. Insult was added to injury when Leeds were then penalised 30 metres from their own line for offside as they chased up a kick. Lamb stepped up to add the kick and put his side into a 9-0 lead.
However, the deficit was cut straight away when Irish were penalised at the restart, cueing the biggest cheer of the afternoon from the home support. Adrian Jarvis was on target with his first attempt to make it 9-3 after 25 minutes.

Irish then crossed for the first try of the game off a set move from the base of the scrum, centre Seilala Mapusua cutting back inside to go over between the posts. Lamb added the conversion to make it 16-3 to the visitors after 34 minutes and it was looking ominous for Leeds.
The home side reacted in tremendous manner and came right back at Irish. After some tough drives by the forwards the ball was moved wide and Adrian Jarvis spotted space outwide and perfectly weighted a chip to the corner for Luther Burrell to collect and go over for the try in full flight. Jarvis added the conversion from near the touchline to make it 10-16.

Lamb had the chance to increase his side's lead on the brink of halftime but his drop goal attempt went wide to the left and it remained 10-16 at the break.

Leeds dominated after the break but could not find a way through the visitors defence. They paid the price after 58 minutes when Lamb popped over a drop goal with Irish's first visit to the Leeds half after the break.

However, once again the home side responded. Jarvis was unlucky to see a penalty chance go wide after Leeds had been awarded a penalty at the scrum. But the home side were scented a chance and they got right back into the game when Daniel Browne forced his way over from close range. The move had come from some brilliant play by Fourie and To'oala. Jarvis added the conversion to make it 17-19.

Headingley Carnegie was then sent wild when Mike MacDonald powered his way over after Fourie had gone close. Jarvis was again on target to give his side a 24-19 lead with ten minutes to go. Jarvis then made sure of the result with a penalty with three minutes left.
